Our Story

Fueling the future

In 2012, PETROSS began an ambitious journey to transform sugarcane and sweet sorghum to naturally produce more bioenergy per acre than any other crop. With critical support from the Advanced Projects Research Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), PETROSS created bigger, more productive (and profitable) biofuel crops — a sustainable source of biofuel, particularly biodiesel and bio-jet fuel. With critical support from ARPA-E, PETROSS began the journey to create inexhaustible and sustainable wells of oil sprouting in economically depressed rural areas. In just a few years, the project created bigger, more productive biofuel crops that can thrive on marginal land. This project ended in March 2017.

The PETROSS project's technologies have been licensed by Renewable Oil Generated with Ultra-productive Energycane (ROGUE) with support from the Department of Energy with the support of a $10.6 million grant from the Office of Biological and Environmental Research in the Office of Science in the U.S. Department of Energy. The ROGUE project is led by the University of Illinois in partnership with Brookhaven National Laboratory, University of Florida, and Mississippi State University.
