Shailendra Sharma is a Senior Scientist for the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois. He earned his bachelor's degree in biology, master's degree in biotechnology, and doctorate in genetics and plant breeding from Charan Singh University in India.

For the PETROSS project, Sharma is integrating Miscanthus genes coded for cold tolerance into sugarcane and sorghum.

The PETROSS project is funded by ARPA-E (Advanced Research Projects Agency—Energy) within the U.S. Department of Energy.
